Additional information

How to read letter positions

Paste your text into the source area. The tool scans the content, groups identical letters, counts their occurrences, and lists the positions where they appear.

Raw text

Spaces, punctuation marks, and non-letter characters are included in the numbering. This is useful when you need the exact location of a letter in the original sentence.

Letters only

Only letters are used to calculate positions. This is often better for encoded messages, acrostics, and simple cryptography exercises.

Accents

When Ignore accents is enabled, é, è, ê, and e are grouped together. If you turn it off, accented letters remain distinct when they appear in the text.

What are first position and offset for?

First position defines the number assigned to the first counted character. The value 1 is the usual human-readable count. Offset then adds or removes a value from every displayed position.

SettingEffect
First position: 1The first counted character is numbered 1.
First position: 0The first counted character is numbered 0, as in some programming contexts.
Offset: 3Every displayed position is increased by 3.

Which separator should you use?

Comma and dash create compact lists, such as 2,8,14 or 2-8-14. Custom mode lets you use your own separator. If the custom field is empty, the tool simply uses a space.

Example: in “The letter”, counting letters only, the letter T can appear in several positions depending on the analyzed text. You can copy only that letter block or export the full table.
