Additional information

Tap code: the Polybius square as taps

Tap code uses the same 5×5 grid idea, but instead of writing coordinates directly, it transmits them with two tap groups: first the row, then the column.

Principle

A letter such as S maps to 43 in the grid. In tap code, that becomes four taps, a pause, then three taps.

Historical use

Tap code is often associated with discreet communication, especially in situations where someone can tap on a wall or surface but cannot speak freely.

Difference from Polybius

The Polybius square focuses on the grid and numeric coordinates. Tap code focuses on rhythmic transmission.

Which tool should you choose?

Use tap code when you want to represent a message as taps or dots. Use the Polybius square when you prefer working with numeric coordinates and the grid. To learn more, see the Wikipedia page about tap code.
