Additional information
Understanding character types
This tool isolates or transforms specific character families in a text: letters, digits, spaces, punctuation, symbols, accented characters, or harder-to-classify characters.
Extract
Keeps only the selected types. Example: extracting digits from Code 42! gives 42.
Remove
Removes the selected types from the source text. Useful for dropping punctuation, digits, or spaces without touching the rest.
Replace
Replaces selected types with the character of your choice. Grouped replacement can turn a whole run into one sign.
Common uses
| Need | Useful setting | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Recover a numeric code | Extract + digits | AB-42-C becomes 42. |
| Mask numbers | Replace + digits | Meet at 18:30 becomes Meet at ##:##. |
| Clean punctuation | Remove + punctuation | Commas, dots and similar signs are removed. |
| Spot accents | Extract + accented characters | Useful when a hidden message uses accented letters as clues. |
Tools to try next
To prepare a treasure-hunt message or a clean letter sequence quickly, the puzzle text cleaner is often more direct: it handles case, accents, spacing, and grouping with broad cleanup settings. Character types remains more precise when you need to target one exact family of signs.
If your task is mainly text editing, also explore the Text category. Find and replace is useful for substituting a precise string, while Filter lines helps keep or remove lines based on a pattern.
