Quick explanation

Accents are reduced to their base letters, then only A-Z letters are counted. Both A=0 and A=1 sums stay visible at the same time, so you do not have to choose a convention too early.

Additional information

Understanding letter sums

A letter sum replaces each letter with its alphabet value, then adds the values together. In puzzles, two conventions often appear: A=0 and A=1. This tool shows both at the same time so you can compare results quickly.

A=0

A is 0, B is 1, C is 2, up to Z as 25. This convention is common when the calculation relates to shifts or computer-style indexing.

A=1

A is 1, B is 2, C is 3, up to Z as 26. This is the most intuitive convention when talking about alphabet rank.

Accents and signs

É, È, or Ê become E, À becomes A, and Ç becomes C. Spaces, digits, and punctuation are not added, so only A-Z letters are counted.

Simple example

WordLettersA=0 sumA=1 sum
APPA + P + P0 + 15 + 15 = 301 + 16 + 16 = 33
KEYK + E + Y10 + 4 + 24 = 3811 + 5 + 25 = 41

When to use this tool

Letter sums are useful for checking a keyword, comparing clues, spotting a hidden value, or testing a numerical path in a treasure hunt. To prepare text, use the Puzzle text cleaner.
